Girlie shares on Encouragement

This week Girlie shared with us from II Corinthians 1:3-5

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

Some of my notes on what she shared:

Discouragement:

We all face discouragement for many reasons. When we are discouraged we don't remember how to get better so it is important for us to encourage one another.

Four reasons to be encouraged:

  1. God is a God of Encouragement

v3: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort

Psalm 86:5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you.

  2. God is there in our afflictions

v4: …who comforts us in all our troubles,

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

  3. We can be a comfort to others

v4: …so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

As we give comfort to others we glorify God. It also makes us feel good.

  4. Our comfort flows through Jesus

v5: For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

We receive, through Christ, by faith, comfort whenever we are discouraged.

Shiho - Sayonara!

Shiho will be going to Canada to study. Let's remember her in prayer and wait in expectancy of what the Lord will do in her before she returns next year. Sayonara! God Bless You!

Update 8/25

This week Pastor Satsuki shared with us from the prayer of Jabez. The prayer itself can be found in I Chronicles 4:9, 10.

This is a great story with message that applies to everyone. Jabez was born and given a name (and destiny) of pain. He prayed that God would change his destiny and it says that God granted his request. We can have our destinies changed too.

Pastor Satsuki shared some of the points from the book, "the Prayer of Jabez." As well as some thoughts from another book that she had been reading in the last week called, "Faith" by Dave Duell (published by FGBMI… sorry, can't find it on Amazon).

The prayer of Jabez has four parts:

That you would bless me greatly

Jabez didn't limit the blessing he could receive by asking for something specific. His prayer was to be blessed with everything that God had for him.

Enlarge my territory

Enlarged territory is not just about being blessed financially and in objective ways. It's about broader horizons, more connections, or as the Japanese say, a wider face. Once he'd received blessing from the Lord it wasn't enough to just hold it. The next step is to spread it; let others experience a flow of blessing through you.

Let your hand be with me

Jabez didn't stop with asking for blessing and broader connections, as many of us might. His prayer recognized that he would need the ongoing power of God. This comes back to not relying on his own strength but looking for divine help, divine power and supernatural ability.

Keep me from harm

Jesus taught his disciples to pray this way as well. Keep us from evil. Jabez recognized that when evil comes he could lose all that the Lord had supplied, so he asked to be kept from harm. The prayer of Jabez was not to have power to stand against and combat evil, but to be kept from it. We face many kinds of temptation as we live on the earth. Our prayer needs to be that God would keep that temptation away from us.

God granted his request

In the New Testament we know it Jesus teaches us to seek that we might find. In James it says we have not because we ask not. Let us ask, that we might receive. Let us ask that our borders could grow that we could have influence in the world as a channel of grace. Let us never forget that we need the strength of the Lord and that we never completely get past the need for a savior. Let us pray that we can be kept safe from harm.

God bless you!

Aotaki

Last Tuesday we all went to Aotaki (near Yunoyama in Mie). The traffic was awful, but it was worth it! Check out some of Gary's pictures in the presentation on the side (click to to see them a little closer up).

Friendly faces, new and familiar

Welcome back, Eva! Just back from the Philippines and here to stay for a while, I can't wait to play some more of your parlor games at our next party!

This week we were also blessed to have two new friends join us. Jessica brought along her good friend Alan, and Matsuoka-san introduced us to his friend Robert from Uganda. It's always great to meet new people and I can't wait to try out some Ugandan cuisine at our next fellowship feast!
